You may have heard that you can get realtime video editing performance with a reasonably powerful PC or Mac and some off-the-shelf video editing software. You may want to investigate these claims a little further. While there are a number of "software only" solutions available on the market, just how much realtime performance you get and whether that performance will meet your workflow needs are still critical questions. More times than not, the software-only solutions fall flat when it comes to speed and fail to deliver expected results when examining image quality.

Low cost "software only" solutions don't have the realtime power needed for pro or often even semi pro editing. No matter what you may have read in the industry magazines or on the internet, the fact remains, video editing (both SD and HD) require a lot of computational horsepower. Without dedicated hardware cards, PCs and Macs simply don't have what you'll need to achieve top-end performance . . . and that's where Canopus EDIUS Pro comes in.

In addition, the EDIUS Pro hardware performs realtime filtering of analog inputs during the capture process to clean up tape-based footage as much as possible using advanced TBC (Time Base Correction) and Comb Filtering.

The included EDIUS Pro software scales up realtime effects performance automatically when you add more power to your host PC CPU. The more CPU power your PC has, the more realtime effects you can expect. Furthermore, EDIUS Pro solutions gives you realtime, full quality, full frame rate analog and DV output, which allows you to preview your work in progress on the type of display on which it will ultimately be seen — a video display or TV. Unlike so many other systems, EDIUS Pro allows the user to print directly to tape without the need to "render" first. This capability includes both digital tape decks (Firewire based) and analog gear (like Betacam, S-VHS, Hi8, VHS or 3/4").
